Word to Number: Phone Keypad Mapping for Phonewords
How the telephone keypad maps letters to digits from 2 to 9, a worked word-to-number example, and how to search for a Phoneword's availability.
Converting a word to a phone number is keypad mapping: each letter of the word is replaced by the digit it sits on. A Phoneword uses this mapping on a 13, 1300 or 1800 number, so the digits a customer dials spell a word connected to your business. The mapping is fixed; whether a mapped word corresponds to an available number is a separate question only the search can answer.
The telephone keypad mapping
- 2 — A, B, C
- 3 — D, E, F
- 4 — G, H, I
- 5 — J, K, L
- 6 — M, N, O
- 7 — P, Q, R, S
- 8 — T, U, V
- 9 — W, X, Y, Z
Letters are mapped across the digits 2 through 9; the digits 0 and 1 carry no letters. Note that 7 and 9 each hold four letters.
A worked word-to-number example
Take the word BUILDER: B is 2, U is 8, I is 4, L is 5, D is 3, E is 3 and R is 7, so the word maps to 2845337. Written as a Phoneword it would read "1300 BUILDER", dialled as 1300 2845337. This is a mapping example only — it does not promise that 1300 BUILDER, or any specific word, is available or available at a particular price.
From a mapped word to a connected number
Once you have candidate words, the practical step is searching. Find a Number searches available 1300/1800 Phonewords; it does not promise a result for a particular word. If the exact word is not available, a variant often is — that is a search outcome, not something this page can promise. The Phonewords page explains the category, and phone number word maker covers brainstorming candidate words.
What a Phoneword costs
Published Phoneword pricing starts from $40 per month, with availability and desirability affecting the price. Premium numbers carry a 12-month rolling contract and a $50 setup, subject to number selection and availability. Hosting sits on the published 1300/1800 plan tiers, and all pricing is ex GST. For the current plan fees and call rates, use the pricing page. If you want the reverse direction — digits decoded back into possible letters — see phone number to word converter.
Word to number: common questions
How do I convert a word to a phone number?
Replace each letter with the digit it sits on, using the mapping from 2 (ABC) to 9 (WXYZ). BUILDER, for example, maps to 2845337.
Does every word make a valid Phoneword?
The mapping itself is deterministic, but the resulting digits need to correspond to an available number. Only the search and the team can confirm that for a specific word.
Can I check whether my word is available?
Yes. Find a Number searches available 1300/1800 Phonewords. It does not promise that a particular word is available or available at a particular price.
How much does a Phoneword cost?

What if my word is longer or shorter than the number?
Word length affects how the letters map onto the number's digits, and only the search confirms how a specific word fits an available number. Keep a few candidate words ready rather than committing to one.
