Phone Number Symbols in Words
The letters in a phone number are keypad symbols. How the published 2–9 letter mapping turns words into digits, with format limits and worked examples.
The symbols on a telephone keypad are letters as well as digits — every key from 2 to 9 carries three or four of them — and a word is what you get when the digits of a number are chosen to spell one. On this site that word format is the Phoneword: a 13, 1300 or 1800 number whose digits carry a word, using the published mapping. This page explains the symbol system and its limits.
The published symbol map
- 2 — ABC
- 3 — DEF
- 4 — GHI
- 5 — JKL
- 6 — MNO
- 7 — PQRS (four letters)
- 8 — TUV
- 9 — WXYZ (four letters)
The 0 and 1 keys carry no letters, so words cannot use them. The map is one-way in practice — several letters share a digit — which is why a word like FLOWER reads as 356937 and BAKERY as 225379, and why searching by word and by digits can both be useful.
The format limits around the symbols
The prefix is fixed and the word must fit the digits after it: up to 4 letters on a 13 number and up to 6 letters on 1300 and 1800 numbers, per the published format table on the Phonewords page. A word longer than the limit cannot be carried whole — that is a property of the format, not a restriction this site adds.
Using the symbols deliberately
If you have a word in mind, search it: the Find a Number search accepts the word or the last six digits, without the 1300 or 1800 prefix, and lists available 1300 and 1800 Phonewords as they stand today. If you have digits in mind, read them back through the map to see what words they can spell before searching. Either way, availability and the price of a specific word — Phoneword pricing starts from $40 per month — are confirmed with the team at connection, not promised by the search.

Phone number symbols in words: questions
Which digits have letters on a phone keypad?
Digits 2 through 9. Each carries three letters except 7 (PQRS) and 9 (WXYZ), which carry four. The 0 and 1 keys carry none.
How many letters fit after the prefix?
Up to 4 letters on a 13 Phoneword and up to 6 letters on 1300 and 1800 Phonewords, per the published format table.
Can two different words spell the same number?
Yes — several letters share each digit, so different words can map to the same digits. That is why it helps to search both the word and its digits.
Does a word number cost more?
Phoneword pricing starts from $40 per month, with availability and desirability affecting the price of a specific word. Standard digit plans start at $10 per month.
